The Fourth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF4) was hosted by the Government of China and was held in the ancient city of Nanjing from 03-06 November 2008. The theme for the fourth session was: Harmonious Urbanization - The Challenge of Balanced Territorial Development. Universal design was one of the issues presented at the Norwegian stand at the Forum exhibition. The World Urban Forum was established by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies and policies. A major challenge is to minimize burgeoning poverty in cities, improve the urban poor's access to basic facilities such as shelter, clean water and sanitation and achieve environment-friendly, sustainable urban growth and development. The fourth session of the World Urban Forum brought together a wide range of stakeholders who focused on various aspects of harmonious urbanization, including territorial balance in urban development, social equity, urban environment and preserving the cultural heritage of cities. The Norwegian State Housing Bank coordinated the Norwegian participation at the Forum exhibition, which focused on participation, inclusion and environment. A number of reports and policy documents were translated into Chinese to accommodate the many Chinese delegates and visitors. Amongst them was the thematic report: "Universal design. Clarification of the concept" published by The Norwegian Ministry of the Environment. |
